This fitting connects directly to your home's 230V lighting circuit. Read this guide in full before you start, and keep it for future reference.

Safety first

Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician. In England and Wales, electrical work in homes must meet Part P of the Building Regulations and BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations). Like-for-like replacement of an existing light fitting is usually not notifiable, but new circuits, new light points, and work in bathrooms or outdoors may need to be notified to Building Control or done by a registered competent person. If you are unsure, use an electrician registered with a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT.

  • Isolate the power at the consumer unit (fuse box). Switch off the lighting circuit's MCB, or the main switch, and lock it off or label it so nobody switches it back on while you work. Turning off the wall switch alone is not safe.
  • Prove the circuit is dead with an approved voltage tester before touching any conductor. Check the tester on a known live source before and after.
  • This is a Class I fitting and must be earthed. Always connect the green/yellow earth conductor.
  • Dry indoor locations only. Do not install in bathroom zones 0, 1 or 2, in covered outdoor areas, or anywhere it may be exposed to moisture or condensation.
  • Check for hidden pipes and cables with a detector before drilling into the ceiling.
  • Make sure the ceiling can bear the weight of the fitting. Fix into a joist, noggin, or with fixings rated for plasterboard.
  • Do not modify the fitting or open the LED driver. The LED is integrated and is not user-replaceable.
  • Disconnect power before cleaning or any maintenance.
  • Work from a stable stepladder or platform, and have a second person help support the fitting while you connect it.
Warning: Incorrect installation can cause electric shock or fire. If in any doubt, stop and consult a qualified electrician.

In the box and tools you need

In the box (contents may vary slightly by batch; check before you start):

  • Light body with integrated LED and driver
  • Mounting plate (bracket)
  • Wall plugs and fixing screws
  • Terminal block (connector) for mains wiring
  • Remote control, where supplied with your model
  • This instruction guide

Tools and materials:

  • Approved voltage tester or two-pole tester
  • Insulated screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
  • Wire strippers and side cutters
  • Drill with suitable bits, plus a pipe and cable detector
  • Pencil and spirit level
  • Stable stepladder
  • Spare lever connectors or a terminal block, if needed
  • Green/yellow earth sleeving, if any earth conductor is bare

Before you start

  • The location is dry and indoors, and outside bathroom zones 0, 1 and 2.
  • The ceiling has a sound fixing point (a joist, noggin, or solid plasterboard with suitable fixings) that can carry the fitting.
  • The existing lighting point has an earth conductor (green/yellow). If there is no earth, do not install this fitting; ask an electrician to upgrade the circuit.
  • The light is controlled by a standard on/off switch. Do not connect it to a dimmer unless the label on the fitting says it is dimmable.

Unpack the fitting on a soft surface to protect the walnut finish, and check for transit damage. Do not install a damaged fitting.

Installation, step by step

Step 1 — Switch off and isolate. Turn off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit. Lock or label the breaker.

Step 2 — Prove dead. Remove the old fitting's cover. Test between every pair of conductors (L–N, L–E, N–E) with your voltage tester. Only continue when all read zero.

Step 3 — Remove the old fitting. Before disconnecting, take a photo of the existing wiring. Note which wires are loop-in, switch line and neutral if it is a ceiling rose. Disconnect and remove the old fitting and its rose.

Step 4 — Prepare the cables. Strip about 8–10mm of insulation from each conductor. Sleeve any bare earth with green/yellow sleeving. If the ceiling had a loop-in rose with several cables, join the loop-in conductors exactly as they were (live loops together, neutrals together, earths together) using a terminal block or lever connectors. Leave one switched live, one neutral and one earth to connect to the light.

Step 5 — Separate the light from its mounting plate. Usually the body twists anticlockwise or is released by side screws. Set the body aside on a soft surface.

Step 6 — Fix the mounting plate. Feed the cables through the centre hole of the plate. Hold the plate level against the ceiling and mark the fixing holes. Check for pipes and cables, then drill and fix the plate securely with the supplied plugs and screws, or into a joist.

Step 7 — Connect the wiring (see Wiring connections below):

  • Earth (green/yellow) to the earth terminal (E), connected first.
  • Neutral (blue, or black on older installations) to N.
  • Switched live (brown, or red on older installations, or a sleeved conductor from the switch) to L.

Then connect the light's own leads to the other side of the same terminal block, matching like to like: earth (green/yellow) to E first, then blue to N, then brown to L.

Step 8 — Check the connections. Tug each wire gently to make sure it is held firmly. No bare copper should be visible outside a terminal. Tighten screw terminals firmly without crushing the conductor.

Step 9 — Mount the light body. With a helper supporting the light, tuck the wiring and connector neatly into the space behind it. Make sure no wire is trapped between the body and the plate. Locate the body onto the mounting plate and secure it (twist clockwise or refit the side screws).

Step 10 — Restore power and test. Switch the circuit back on at the consumer unit and test the light at the wall switch.

Wiring connections

Connect like to like: live to L, neutral to N, earth to E. Never connect live to the earth terminal.

Conductor UK colour (since 2006) Older UK colour Fitting terminal
Switched live Brown Red (or black/blue sleeved red) L
Neutral Blue Black N
Earth Green/yellow Green/yellow or bare (sleeve it) E

In older loop-in roses, the black wire from the switch cable is actually a switched live. It should be sleeved red or brown. If it isn't, sleeve it before connecting it to L.

Using the light

The light offers three colour tones: warm, neutral and cool white. On most models you change tone with the wall switch: switch off, then on again within about 2 seconds to move to the next tone. Models supplied with a remote control use its buttons instead. The light may remember the last tone used.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
Light does not come on Power still off, breaker tripped, or loose connection Check the consumer unit. Isolate, then recheck L and N connections
Breaker trips when switched on Live touching earth or neutral; trapped wire Isolate immediately. Inspect for trapped or damaged wires; call an electrician
Light flickers or glows faintly when off Connected to a dimmer, or switch on the neutral instead of the live Use a standard switch. Have an electrician confirm the switch breaks the live
Colour tone won't change Switching too slowly or too fast Switch off and on within about 2 seconds; wait 10 seconds and retry
Remote not working Battery flat or not paired Replace the battery and follow the pairing step on the remote's insert

If a problem persists, switch off at the consumer unit and contact a qualified electrician or our support team.

Care and maintenance

  • Isolate the power and let the fitting cool before cleaning.
  • Wipe with a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth. Do not use solvents, abrasives or polish on the walnut finish or gold frame.
  • Never spray liquid onto the fitting.
  • The LED is not replaceable. If it fails, the whole fitting must be replaced.

Disposal

Do not put this fitting in household waste. Take it to a recycling centre that accepts waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
