AstroGlobe Engraved Glass Table Lamp

A small glass sphere, 8cm across on a turned solid wood base about 6cm high, with a scene laser-engraved inside the glass. Unlit it looks like a paperweight with a faint etching suspended in it. Lit from below by a warm 3000K LED, the engraving catches the light and lifts into three dimensions, floating in the middle of the ball.

Nine designs are offered, from a cratered moon and the rings of Saturn to the sweep of the Milky Way, a heart, a rain cloud, a standing deer and a boy holding a balloon. Each casts a slightly different pattern of light onto the surface it stands on. At this size it belongs on a bedside table, a bookshelf, a desk corner or a windowsill rather than lighting a room.

Power is by USB with the cable included, so it can run from a laptop, a bedside charger or a battery pack. It makes an easy gift, and it is a gentle enough light to leave on in a child's room at bedtime. Use a UK-approved USB mains adapter, which is not supplied. This is a lamp, not a toy: the glass sphere can break if dropped, so keep it out of reach of small children.
