Bamboo Shade Table Lamp

This is a straightforward vintage shape done properly: a tapered bamboo shade over a plain turned base, with nothing decorative added. The weave is tight enough to hide the bulb but open enough to let a little light escape through the sides, so the lamp gives both a downward pool for reading and a softer halo around itself. It suits rooms with wood, linen and wool already in them rather than glossy modern schemes.

Two sizes are offered in two base materials. The small version stands thirty-six centimetres tall with a twenty-three centimetre shade and fits a bedside table comfortably; the large is forty-eight centimetres with a narrower eighteen centimetre shade and reads more like a small floor lamp on a low table. Wood bases are warmer and heavier looking, metal bases are slimmer and sit better in a room that already has a lot of timber.

Dimming versions of all four combinations are available if you want to wind the light down in the evening rather than switching between on and off. The lamp draws eleven to fifteen watts and runs on ninety to two hundred and sixty volts, so it is happy on UK mains with the appropriate plug. Keep the shade dry and dust it with a soft brush; bamboo will mark if you wipe it with a wet cloth.
