Ceramic Coffee and Tea Canister 900ml

Ceramic is the traditional material for storing tea for a reason: it blocks light completely. Where a glass jar lets daylight slowly flatten the flavour of leaves or ground coffee, an opaque glazed body keeps the contents in the dark, which is exactly where they should be. This canister holds 900ml, enough for a large bag of beans or a serious quantity of loose leaf.

The form is Japanese in feeling — straight sided, slightly tapered, with a well-fitted lid and no handle. Four designs are offered, each with a different glaze treatment, and all four are restrained enough to leave standing on an open shelf rather than hidden in a cupboard. At 9cm across and 15cm tall it fits under a standard wall unit without a fight.

The lid seals to keep air out and aroma in, which is the other half of the job. Wash by hand in warm water and dry thoroughly before refilling — trapped moisture is the enemy of stored coffee. Handle it as fired ceramic: it will chip if knocked against a hard worktop edge.
