Cordless Aluminium Reading Lamp

The best reading lamp is one you can put exactly where the book is, and this one has no cable to argue with. An aluminium column carries a slim head that throws light forward and down onto the page rather than out into the room, so it can sit beside an armchair without lighting the whole living room or spilling across a shared bed.

A touch panel on the body steps through three brightness levels: low for a nightlight, medium for ambient company, and full for reading properly. The internal cell charges over USB in around two hours and then runs for eight to ten hours, which covers several evenings of ordinary use. Because there is no flex, the lamp moves with you — to the kitchen table, a bedside, a desk or out to a garden table on a still evening.

Two heights are offered, 35cm and 45cm, and five finishes: black, red, brown, orange and white. The aluminium body keeps the weight low without feeling flimsy, and the base is broad enough to stay put on a soft surface. Charge it with a UK-approved USB mains adapter, which is not supplied. Charge indoors on a hard surface, and do not leave it charging under cushions or bedding.
