Wine Decanter and Aerator Set

Most bottles worth opening improve with twenty minutes of air, and a decanter is simply the fastest way to give them that. This set pairs a hand-blown lead-free crystal vessel with an aerating pourer that draws air through the stream as it falls, a fine mesh filter that catches sediment and cork, and a small stand to rest the pourer on between glasses.

The crystal is thin-walled and clear rather than tinted, so the colour of the wine is readable against the glass — a large part of the point of decanting. The base is broad and low, which gives the wine a wide surface in contact with air, and the neck is narrow enough to pour accurately with one hand. The aerator seats in the neck with a silicone collar and lifts straight out for washing.

Two formats: a smaller carafe suited to a single bottle at a dinner table, and a larger decanter for a magnum or for serving several people at once. Hand wash in warm water without detergent, drain upside down on the stand, and store uncovered. The aerator can also be used straight in the bottle neck when there is no time to decant properly, which covers most weeknights rather than only special occasions.
