Mountain Crystal Wine Decanter

A wide crystal decanter with a mountain range moulded into the floor of the vessel, so wine poured in appears to fill a valley and the peaks stand clear above the surface. It measures 22 by 18.5 by 6.2cm and holds 1.5 litres, which takes a full bottle comfortably with the headroom needed for the wine to actually breathe.

The broad, shallow shape is what does the aerating: a large surface area exposed to air opens a young red far faster than a narrow carafe of the same volume. Two versions are offered, differing in the profile of the moulded range. At 620g empty it has real presence on a table, and it works as a piece on a sideboard when it is not in use.

Hand wash in warm water and drain upside down over a rack; the wide neck means a decanter brush reaches the base easily, which is not true of most sculptural decanters. Do not put it in a dishwasher and do not pour anything hot into it. Dry the outside with a lint-free cloth to keep the crystal clear of water spots, which show up badly on a piece this wide when a light is behind it on a sideboard.
