Multi-Tier Wooden Trouser Hanger

Trousers take up more rail than anything else in a wardrobe, and hanging them one to a hanger is what fills a rail fastest. This rack holds several pairs on a single hook by stacking horizontal bars down a central spine, turning about eight inches of rail into storage for five garments.

It is made from solid wood — walnut, dark and close-grained, or cedar, pale and aromatic — with each bar smoothly sanded and finished so nothing catches on wool or lining. The bars carry a fine anti-slip coating, which is what stops loosely folded trousers creeping off, and the swivel hook turns a full circle so the rack can be pulled out and turned to reach a lower bar without unhooking it.

Cedar in particular is worth choosing for a wool wardrobe: the aromatic oils in the timber are naturally unattractive to clothes moths, and a light sand every year or so brings the scent back. Beyond trousers, the bars suit scarves, tablecloths and folded throws. Wipe with a dry cloth; do not use water or polish on the wood. Two racks side by side will hold most of a working wardrobe's trousers in about a foot of rail, which is roughly what four ordinary hangers would take.
