Stainless Steel Whistling Kettle

A proper stovetop kettle in thick-walled stainless steel, with a wide flat base that sits square on the hob and holds heat once it is up to temperature. The whistle in the spout is loud enough to hear from another room and stops the moment the spout cover is lifted. There is nothing electronic to fail and nothing to descale beyond the inside of the body.

Two capacities are offered. The 2.5L version measures 19 by 19 by 22cm and weighs about 460g; the 3L is 20 by 20 by 23cm at roughly 670g. Both work on gas, induction and electric ceramic hobs, which covers almost every kitchen, and the wooden handle stays cool enough to lift without a cloth for the first few pours.

Three finishes are offered: a clean white, a matt black and a soft light green, all with the same wooden handle. It is a good-looking object to leave out on a hob rather than something to hide in a cupboard. Take the usual care with boiling water: lift the spout cover away from you, keep the handle turned in from the edge of the hob, and keep children well clear while it is heating. Descale the interior periodically in hard water areas to keep the base clean.
