Wooden Pull-Switch Wall Light

A wall light with its own pull cord is the most practical thing you can hang beside a bed. There is no reaching for a bedside lamp and no walking back across a dark room to a switch by the door — the cord falls where your hand already is. This one pairs a turned wood body with a painted metal shade, and the whole fitting is only 20.5cm tall, so it takes up no visual room at all.

Five colours are offered, all muted rather than bright: white, sage green, grey, a soft yellow and a dusty pink. Each is paired with the natural wood, which keeps the fitting warm even in the cooler shades. Hung in pairs either side of a bed they read as a considered choice; used singly in a hallway, over a reading chair or beside a bathroom mirror they simply do their job quietly.

The socket is a standard E27, so any common bulb fits and the lamp can be re-lamped for years without hunting for an obscure fitting. No bulb is supplied, which lets you pick the brightness and colour temperature to suit the room. It runs on AC 90-260V, covering UK mains without adaptation. This is a hardwired fitting: have it installed by a qualified electrician, isolate the circuit first, and check the wall for cables and pipes before drilling.
