Aluminium Outdoor Up and Down Wall Light

An up-and-down wall light is the cleanest way to light a front door, a side return or a garden wall. Rather than flooding the space, it lays two soft triangles of light against the surface it is fixed to — one rising, one falling — so the wall itself becomes the light source. Used in a run along a boundary or either side of a doorway, the effect is architectural and calm.

The body is aluminium, chosen because it sheds heat well and does not rust, and it is finished in either a matt black that disappears against dark brick or a warm gold that reads as a deliberate detail on pale render. Three sizes are offered — 3W, 5W and 7W — and the largest is a tall 26cm slot that throws a longer beam for double-height walls. Warm white suits brick and timber; cool white sharpens up stone, slate and grey render.

Being slim, at just 4cm deep, it sits close to the wall and does not catch on passing shoulders or garden furniture. This is a hardwired outdoor fitting, not a plug-in lamp, and it must be installed by a qualified electrician on a suitably protected circuit. Isolate the supply before starting, and check for buried cables and pipes before drilling into any wall.
