Amber Glass Candlestick Holder 26cm

A tall candlestick moulded in amber glass, 26 centimetres from base to socket, with the stem stepped so it catches the light along its length. Coloured glass earns its place on a mantelpiece in a way that clear glass does not: it reads as an object during the day and glows from the inside once a candle is lit above it, which doubles the amount of work one piece does.

The base is nine centimetres square, which is a generous footprint for the height and means it stands solidly rather than needing to be pushed against a wall. A single one works on a console or a windowsill; a pair either side of a mirror is the traditional arrangement; three at staggered heights down a dining table is the most striking. It takes a standard taper candle, which is not supplied.

Candle safety matters and is worth stating plainly. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep the holder well clear of curtains, paper and anything else that can catch, and out of reach of children and pets. Stand it on a heat-resistant surface, and let the glass cool completely before moving it or removing wax. Trim wicks to about five millimetres to reduce sooting. Wash by hand only.
