Amber Glass Semi-Flush Ceiling Light

Amber glass does something clear glass never will, which is to warm the light before it reaches the room. Behind this shade a single bulb turns into a soft honey glow that flatters a hallway at night and takes the clinical edge off a landing. The shade is a simple ribbed dome held in a brass collar, a shape borrowed from early twentieth century fittings and left alone since.

It is a semi-flush mount, so the shade sits a short drop below the ceiling rather than hanging on a flex. That makes it usable in rooms where a pendant would be in the way, while still giving the fitting enough presence to be worth looking at. The body measures twenty-eight centimetres across and twenty-five tall, which is generous for a hall and modest for a living room.

Two finishes are available. Brass is the warmer of the two and leans traditional; electroplated copper is pinker and sits well with darker paint. Both take a single E27 bulb, which is not supplied, so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature yourself. A warm white LED at around four hundred lumens suits the amber glass best; anything cooler fights it. Wipe the glass occasionally with a dry cloth to keep the colour clear.
