Anamorphic Mirror Mug and Coaster

Anamorphic art is an old optical trick and it is genuinely delightful in this form. The pattern printed around the outside of the mug looks stretched and abstract on its own. Stand the mug on its mirrored coaster and the reflection resolves the distortion into a clean, correctly proportioned animal. It is the sort of object that people pick up, turn round and then show to somebody else.

Three designs are available - a bird, a deer and a horse - each offered in gold or silver against the mirrored tray. Two capacities are made: a ninety millilitre cup, which is an espresso or a small strong coffee, and a two hundred and twenty-five millilitre cup for tea or a flat white. The smaller size makes a particularly good gift because the effect is just as strong.

The mug is porcelain, glazed and smooth, with a handle sized for a finger rather than a token loop. The tray is the working part of the piece, so treat it as you would a mirror: wipe it rather than scouring it, and keep it away from abrasive sponges. Hand washing is the safest route for both pieces to protect the print and the mirrored surface.
