Andi Brass and Walnut Table Lamp

Three materials, each doing one job. Brass forms the collar and the switch, walnut makes the base and gives the lamp its weight, and a glass shade sits on top and diffuses the light. None of them are trying to imitate anything else, which is why the lamp looks more expensive than most in its class: there is no veneer, no printed grain and no plated plastic anywhere on it.

The shade is twenty-two centimetres across on both versions, with the difference being height. The shorter lamp at twenty-four and a half centimetres suits a bedside table or a shelf; the taller at thirty-one and a half works better on a console or a sideboard where it has to be seen across a room. Both are stable enough not to be knocked over by a passing sleeve.

A push-button switch on the body cycles through three colour temperatures, warm, neutral and cool white, which is genuinely useful on a lamp that might be doing bedtime reading one hour and daytime work the next. The LED is integrated, so there is no bulb to source. A hundred and fifty centimetre cord gives room to reach a socket without an extension lead.
