Antique Brass Outdoor Wall Light

An oval surface-mounted fitting in cast aluminium with an antique brass finish, holding a panel of clear ribbed glass. At twenty-four point eight centimetres long and eleven high it is a substantial piece for a porch, a garden wall or either side of a front door, and the weight of one point nine kilograms tells you it is built from solid castings rather than pressed sheet.

The ribbed glass is what makes this fitting worth having outdoors. Plain glass would show the bulb directly and glare in the eye at head height; the ribs break the light into vertical bands so the fitting reads as bright without being uncomfortable to walk past. The antique brass finish is darker and warmer than polished brass and weathers gracefully rather than needing constant polishing.

It takes a single E27 bulb and is rated IP44, which covers splashing water from any direction and makes it suitable for an exposed wall or a porch. Outdoor mains wiring is notifiable work in the United Kingdom, so this fitting must be installed by a qualified electrician using suitable external cable and glands, with the circuit isolated at the consumer unit before any work begins. Check the gasket and the fixings once a year, particularly on an exposed wall.
