Ashlow Black Lantern Post Light

The Ashlow is a square pillar lantern in black metal and clear glass, made to sit on top of a gate pier, a wall cap or a driveway post. A pyramid roof with a turned finial sheds rain, four glazed panels with a fine grid bar let the light out on every side, and a stepped cast base gives the fitting enough visual weight to hold its own on masonry.

At 36cm high on a 20cm square base it is sized for a standard brick or block pier without overhanging the edges. It takes an E27 screw fitting and accepts LED, incandescent or fluorescent lamps, so brightness and colour can be matched to the setting. An IP65 rating seals the body against dust and against water jets from any direction, which is what an exposed pier top asks for.

The clear glass and open grid mean the bulb is part of the look, so a vintage filament lamp reads as a warm point of light through the panes while a modern LED gives a brighter, cleaner spread across a drive. A pair on matching piers marks an entrance clearly at night. Check the pier top is level before fixing, and clean the glazed panels now and then, since rain marks show quickly on clear glass.
