Avilo Green Marble Wall Sconce

The Avilo is a solid disc of dark green marble, 20cm across, with its edges worked round like a river stone so there is no hard rim anywhere on the piece. A matte white glass sphere sits in a shallow well cut into the face, deliberately off-centre, which stops the design reading as a plain circle. The weight and the softened profile make it feel more like an object on the wall than a fitting.

The stone is cut from natural blocks, so the pale veining across the face runs differently on every sconce and no two are identical. Light comes from the glass sphere alone. The opal finish holds the source back so there is no glare when walking past at eye level, and the recessed well behind it bounces a soft halo back onto the wall around the disc. The result is layered rather than flat.

A bright point in the middle, a gentle wash behind it and dark stone reading almost black at the edge: it works as a low-level light beside a bed, along a hallway, or in a pair either side of a mirror. Solid marble carries real weight, so the wall fixing needs to go into something sound rather than plasterboard alone, and the position is worth settling before any cable is run. Dust the stone with a dry soft cloth.
