Bauhaus Colour Block Glass Pendant

This is a small pendant with a loud idea: the glass shade and the base ring are finished in two different colours, so the fitting works as a piece of colour in a room rather than as a neutral light. At 15cm across and 17cm high it is deliberately compact, which means a row of three over a breakfast bar reads as a repeated accent rather than as three large objects.

Twelve combinations are offered, pairing green, orange, white or frosted green shades with green, red or black bases. Warm shades over a black base look graphic and contemporary; frosted green over green is quieter and more period. Because they are small and inexpensive relative to a chandelier, mixing two or three combinations along an island is a genuinely good idea rather than a compromise. Hung singly it also works well over a hallway console or in a downstairs loo, where a full-size pendant would feel overbearing.

The cord adjusts to about 150cm, so the hanging height can be set for a bar, a table or a stairwell. It takes an E27 or E26 bulb, not supplied, which lets you match the brightness to the job. It is rated for dry locations only. Assembly is straightforward but it is a mains fitting, so the wiring is an electrician's job.
