Borosilicate Glass Jug 1.8L

Water, juice and iced tea all look better poured from glass, and this 1.8 litre jug is sized for a full table rather than a single glass. The body is borosilicate, a heat-resistant glass that handles a change in temperature far better than ordinary soda-lime does, so it copes with freshly brewed tea cooling down as readily as it does with a jug of chilled water straight from the fridge.

The lid is stainless steel with a strainer built into it, which holds back loose tea leaves, mint, sliced lemon or ice as you pour, and the spout is shaped to break cleanly so the tablecloth stays dry. The opening is a generous 8 cm across, wide enough to get a hand and a cloth inside for cleaning and wide enough to drop in fruit or a handful of ice. Overall it measures 21.7 by 14 by 9 centimetres.

Glass asks for a little care. Add very hot liquid gradually rather than in one rush, and never stand the jug on a hob, a hotplate or an open flame, because heat-resistant is not the same as flameproof. Check the rim and the base for chips before each use and retire it if you find one. Keep it back from the edge of a worktop where a child could reach up and pull it down, and wash it by hand.
