Brass Finish Country Wall Light

A plain swan-neck bracket in iron, finished in a warm brass tone, with a shallow shade turned down over the lamp. It is the kind of fitting that has been screwed to farmhouse and workshop walls for a hundred years, and it has survived because the shape is right: the shade directs the light down where it is wanted and the neck holds the lamp far enough off the wall to be useful.

The projection is 24 centimetres, which is generous - enough to light a worktop, a bedside table, a hall shelf or a picture properly rather than just washing the wall behind it. The shade is 16 wide and the whole fitting stands eight tall at the bracket. Because the metal is iron with a brass-tone finish rather than solid brass, it holds its colour rather than developing a patina, and it will not tarnish in a kitchen.

The fitting takes an E27 lamp up to 40 watts, and you can order it with or without a bulb supplied. A warm filament-style LED is the right choice here; a cool white lamp fights the finish. It runs at 90 to 260 volts and is not dimmable unless a dimmable bulb is used on a dimmer circuit. This is hardwired mains work, so it should be installed by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated first. Dry locations only.
