Carved Jaguar Stone Sculpture

A cat mid-prowl is a long, low shape, and that is what makes this piece useful. It sits horizontally across a console or a run of shelving where an upright ornament would fight with whatever is hung above it. The carving follows the line of the shoulder and haunch in one continuous sweep, and the surface is polished smooth so the light travels along the back rather than breaking up across it.

The black body is finished with gold across the face and paws, which lifts the detail without turning the whole thing metallic. Against pale wood or a white wall the contrast is sharp; against dark panelling the gold does the work on its own. It suits a study, a hallway console or the middle shelf of a bookcase, where it reads as sculpture rather than as an animal ornament.
