Colour Block Cotton Runner Rug

Colour block is a good answer to a narrow space. A runner this size - forty-five by a hundred and twenty centimetres - has no room for a detailed motif, so a few large fields of flat colour laid against each other do far more work than a busy pattern would. Three combinations are offered: violet with yellow, violet with green, and a graphic black and white for rooms that already have plenty going on.

The blend is cotton with polyester, which is a sensible pairing for a rug that will get walked on daily. The cotton gives it a soft, matt surface and a bit of natural texture; the polyester carries the colour and stops the whole thing distorting when it is washed. It suits a galley kitchen, a small hallway, the side of a bed, or the front of a sink.

It is machine washable and stain-resistant, which is the point of a rug in these positions. Regular vacuuming keeps the pile lifted between washes. There is no rubber backing, so on a smooth floor it is worth using a thin anti-slip underlay - particularly at the top of stairs or anywhere it will be stepped onto quickly.
