Macrame Plant Hangers, Set of Four

Hanging a plant solves two problems at once. It frees up the windowsill and the side table, and it puts trailing foliage at a height where it can actually trail. Macrame is still the best way to do it because the knotting carries the weight across several cords rather than one, and because a plain pot looks considerably better sitting inside a cradle of knotted rope than it does on a shelf.

This set contains four hangers, each knotted by hand from 100% cotton rope in an ivory finish and finished with wooden beads. The four are different lengths: roughly 89cm, 102cm, 124cm and 170cm. That range is deliberate rather than arbitrary, because hanging four plants at four different drops in the same window looks composed, whereas four identical hangers in a row looks like a display stand. Each cradle takes a pot of up to about 18cm across, which covers most standard nursery pots and small decorative planters.

The hangers can be fixed to a ceiling hook, a wall bracket, a curtain pole or a shelf edge. Use a proper hook rated for the weight of a pot plus wet compost, which is heavier than most people expect, and fix into a joist or use a suitable cavity fixing rather than relying on plasterboard alone. Keep the cotton rope out of the way of direct watering, and let the pot drain before rehanging it.
