Crescent Metal Wall Clock 46cm

This is a clock that behaves more like a piece of wall sculpture, built as an open metal crescent rather than a disc. There is no solid face behind the hands, so the wall colour shows through and the shape is read as an outline. At forty-six by thirty-nine centimetres it is large enough to fill an awkward stretch of wall that is too narrow for a picture and too wide to leave empty.

The frame is cut and formed from metal with a dark finish, and the indices are integrated into the curve rather than printed on, which is what keeps it looking deliberate rather than like a clock face stuck onto a shape. The hands are slim and dark, and because there is no dial behind them, legibility depends on contrast with the wall: it reads best against a pale ground.

Inside is a silent Japanese quartz movement, which sweeps rather than ticks and is the sort of mechanism that keeps decent time for years without attention. It runs on a single AA battery, not supplied. Because the frame is open it needs occasional dusting with a soft dry cloth, and it hangs from a single fixing sized for the weight of a metal piece this size.
