Crystal and Glass Table Lamp 15cm

At twelve centimetres across and fifteen tall this is a genuinely small lamp, closer in scale to an ornament than to a bedside light, and it is best used where a full-size lamp would look heavy. The body combines cut crystal with a glass dome on a metal base, so the light inside is broken up and scattered rather than simply diffused. On a shelf or a windowsill it reads as a piece of glassware that happens to glow.

Because of the size, this is accent lighting rather than task lighting. It works well at the end of a bookshelf, in the corner of a hallway console, or on a dressing table where a little sparkle is the point. Two or three of them along a run of shelving give a much better effect than one on its own, which is worth bearing in mind if you are lighting a long wall.

The fitting is E27 and rated at five watts, with a simple on and off switch on the lead, and the lamp runs from a standard mains cable. A low-wattage warm white LED suits the crystal best and keeps the body cool. Clean the glass and crystal with a soft dry brush to reach between the cut faces, and only use a damp cloth on the metal base, drying it immediately afterwards.
