Crystal Bar Stainless Steel Wall Light

A vertical bar of cut crystal held against a steel backplate is about as direct as decorative lighting gets. Two G9 sources sit behind the crystal, one at each end, and the light travels through the length of the bar and out through the facets, so the whole column lights rather than just the points where the bulbs are. The effect is closer to a piece of jewellery than a conventional sconce.

Two sizes are offered. The fourteen by thirty centimetre version is compact enough for a pair either side of a bathroom mirror or a bedhead, where the vertical line flatters a face better than a light placed above. The twenty-one by forty-five centimetre version has real presence and suits a hallway wall or a stairwell, hung singly, where it can be seen from a distance.

The backplate comes in black or gold. Black keeps the crystal as the only bright element and reads as more contemporary; gold warms the whole fitting and picks up the refraction at the edges. Both take two G9 bulbs, which are not supplied. G9 LEDs are the sensible choice here because they run cool behind glass and are easy to change. Dust the crystal with a soft dry brush.
