Walnut is the darkest of the common board timbers, and this one is left plain so the grain does the decorating: long straight figure through the centre, with the browns shifting from chocolate to something closer to purple depending on the light. Both faces are finished to the same standard, which is the whole idea. One side takes the knife work, the other goes straight to the table.
It measures 35 by 25 centimetres and is 2 centimetres thick, which is substantial enough to stay put under a heavy knife without being so heavy that it is a chore to lift with one hand. That footprint takes a whole loaf, a full round of cheese with the accompaniments, or a chicken with room to carve. It sits flat and has no handle hole to interrupt the surface.
Hand wash only, in warm water, and dry it standing on edge so air reaches both faces; never leave it soaking and never put it in the dishwasher, as either will split the timber. Rub food-grade mineral oil into both sides when the wood starts to look dry, roughly once a month at first. Use a separate board for raw meat and fish, and keep knives out of children's reach.
