Double-Walled Glass French Press

A single-wall cafetiere loses heat from the moment you pour, which is why the second cup is always disappointing. This one is built from two layers of borosilicate glass with an insulating gap between them, so the brew holds temperature far longer and the outer surface stays comfortable to hold. You can carry it to the table and leave it there through a long breakfast without the coffee going flat and lukewarm.

The collar and handle are turned from wood, which gives the piece some warmth against all that clear glass, and the plunger and mesh filter are stainless steel. The mesh is fine enough to hold back grounds while letting the oils through, which is the whole reason to brew this way rather than through paper. At 350ml it makes three to five small cups, the right size for one person taking their time or two people sharing.

Borosilicate handles thermal shock well, so hot water straight from the kettle is no problem, but treat it as glassware rather than a mug. Rinse the filter assembly after each brew and wash the beaker by hand in warm soapy water. It measures roughly 133 by 75 by 170 millimetres and weighs 820 grams, substantial enough to feel properly made rather than disposable.
