Engraved Crystal Ball LED Light

A solid glass sphere, laser-etched inside so that a three-dimensional scene appears to hang suspended in the middle of it. Set on the illuminated wooden base the etching catches the light and reads clearly from every angle, while the glass itself stays perfectly clear. The whole piece measures 8 x 6cm, small enough for a desk, a bookshelf or the corner of a bedside table.

The base is turned from solid wood and takes power over a USB lead, lighting the sphere from below with a steady warm glow. Off, it is simply a clear glass ball on a wooden stand and still looks deliberate; on, the etched scene lifts out of the glass. Designs range from planets and the solar system to hearts, animals and a hot-air balloon, so it can be matched to the room it goes in.

It makes a considered desk ornament, a reading-light companion or a gift that does not need wrapping in explanation. Dust the glass with a dry, lint-free cloth and keep the wooden base away from damp. The sphere is solid glass and heavier than it looks, so keep it away from the edge of a shelf and out of reach of small children.
