Faux Eucalyptus Wreath

Eucalyptus is the one piece of foliage that works all year. It is not tied to a season the way holly or blossom is, the silvery green sits comfortably against almost any paint colour, and the round leaf shape reads as soft even when the arrangement is quite structured. A wreath made from it is therefore a year-round fixture rather than something that comes out for six weeks and goes back in a box, which is a better use of both the money and the cupboard space.

The stems are moulded plastic with a soft surface finish and are bendable, so the wreath can be reshaped after unpacking and adjusted once it is hung. Press the stems outward to fill any gaps and fan the leaves so they sit at different angles rather than flat, and the whole thing immediately looks less manufactured. Two sizes are offered: 33cm suits an interior door, a window or a narrow chimney breast, while 38cm has the presence a front door needs to look deliberate from the street.

The stems are weatherproof, so the wreath can go outside on a covered porch or a front door without the leaves fading or going brittle after the first wet month. It also works indoors as a wall piece, laid flat around a candle as a table centrepiece, or hung from a mantelpiece. Dust occasionally with a soft brush or a burst of cool air. Reshape the stems whenever it has been stored flat.
