Candlelight in quantity is what makes a room feel different, and quantity is exactly what real tealights make difficult - someone has to light them, watch them and put them out. These do the same job electrically: a warm amber LED behind a frosted lens, flickering irregularly rather than pulsing on a timer, so from across a table they pass for the real thing.

Buy them by the two dozen for a mantel and a few lanterns, by fifty for a long table, or by the hundred if you are dressing a whole room for an event. They sit in standard tealight holders, drop into glass jars and lanterns, and can be lined along a windowsill or a stair edge where a real flame would be a genuine hazard. Each has its own switch on the base and runs on a coin cell, supplied fitted.

Because there is no flame there is no smoke, no wax and nothing to extinguish, which makes them usable around fabric, paper and greenery. Keep the coin cells out of reach of children and pets - swallowed button batteries are dangerous - and dispose of spent cells at a battery recycling point rather than in household waste.
