Folding Wood Book Lamp

Closed, this looks like a slim wooden book lying on a shelf. Opened, the pages fan out into a full circle and the whole thing becomes a soft lantern that stands on its own spine. It is a neat piece of engineering and a genuinely good gift, because the transformation is the whole point and it never stops being satisfying to open one for the first time.

Three wood finishes are offered: rosewood is the darkest and reddest, walnut is browner and more even, and maple is the palest of the three. Three sizes are available in each, from a small fifteen by eleven centimetre version through a seventeen by twelve to a twenty-two by seventeen. The larger sizes throw noticeably more light and hold their fanned shape more firmly when fully opened.

Lighting is either a three-colour warm range, cycling through white, warm white and warm yellow, or an RGB version that shifts automatically through colours. Power is USB rechargeable with a runtime of over five hours on a full charge, so it can be carried around the house or taken away. The lamp contains a rechargeable battery and should be recycled through electrical waste rather than household refuse.
