The Giva is a square glazed lantern built to sit on top of a gate pier, a low garden wall or a driveway post. Four clear glass panes are held in a slim anthracite aluminium frame, and a stepped base plate lifts the box a little proud of the surface it stands on. The bulb stays visible through the glass on all four sides, so the fitting reads as an object on the pier as much as a source of light.
Because the light source is on show, a clear filament bulb suits the design best and lets the glow spread evenly through the glass instead of sitting behind a shade. The E27 screw fitting takes one bulb of up to 60 W and is changed by the end user, so light colour and brightness can be set to match the rest of the garden. Wired through an external dimmer the Giva dims as well, though a dimmer is not supplied.
It is a hardwired 230V fitting rated IP44, so the cable is brought up through the pier and the work belongs to a qualified electrician rather than a plug and a socket. IP44 covers splashing water from any direction, which suits an exposed pier top in ordinary British weather. A pair either side of a drive gives a gateway an obvious threshold. Clean the four panes now and then, since a glazed lantern shows dust sooner than a solid one.
