Green Velvet Flush Drum Light 38cm

A flush drum in green velvet with an opal diffuser closing the underside - a shape that has been in British homes since the middle of the last century and still does the job better than most modern alternatives. The fabric absorbs the glare that a bare shade would throw sideways, and the opal disc spreads what is left evenly down into the room, so the ceiling reads as a soft panel rather than a bright spot.

At 38 centimetres across and just under 10 deep it is generous without hanging into the room, which makes it a sensible answer for a hallway, a bedroom or a low-ceilinged landing where a pendant would be in the way. The green is deep and slightly blue rather than olive, and it sits well against white plaster, pale grey and natural wood. A silver inner lining lifts the light and stops the colour tinting it.

The fitting takes two E27 large Edison screw lamps, which are not supplied, and is rated IP20 for indoor dry locations. It is Class 1 and must be earthed, so it needs a proper earthed ceiling point. Installation is hardwired mains work and should be carried out by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated. Do not fit it in bathroom zones 0, 1 or 2, and mount it only to a point rated for the weight.
