Handmade Animal Bath Mat

Cut to the outline of a duck, a cat or a penguin, this hand-tufted mat brings a bit of humour to a room that usually gets none. The shapes are simple and graphic rather than cartoonish, so they work as well in a grown-up bathroom as in a family one, and the raised tufting picks out a beak, an ear or a wing in contrast yarn.

Each mat is tufted by hand, which is why no two are quite identical in pile height or edge line. The yarn is soft, dense and thirsty — it takes the water off wet feet quickly and dries out between uses rather than staying clammy. The backing is a bonded non-slip layer that holds on tile and vinyl. Two sizes are offered, a small for a basin or a child's step and a medium for a shower tray or bath edge.

Wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle and dry flat; do not tumble dry, which flattens hand-tufted pile. Bathroom floors are slippery when wet, so lay the mat on a clean, dry, level surface, check the grip after washing, and supervise young children in the bathroom at all times. They also suit a child's bedroom or a shower room bench, where the shape reads as a small rug rather than as bathroom equipment left out on the floor.
