Ice Cream Face Resin Sculpture

Classical statuary is serious to the point of solemnity, which is exactly what makes this piece funny. A Renaissance-style bust has been cast in resin and given a swirl of ice cream in place of the top of the head, the whole thing rendered in soft dessert colours. It is the sort of object that stops a guest mid-sentence, and it lifts a shelf of otherwise sensible books enormously.

Three flavours are offered and each changes the character of the piece. Blueberry is deep and slightly moody, the closest of the three to reading as fine art. Strawberry is the most playful and the one that works best in a colourful room. Vanilla is the quietest, close to plain plaster, and slips into a minimal scheme without shouting. All three are cast in the same detail, with the sculpted face crisp and the ice cream swirl deliberately glossy against it.

It measures 13.5 by 16 by 8 centimetres, so it fits a bookshelf, a desk or a mantelpiece without needing a whole surface to itself. The resin is solid and reasonably weighty, and the base is flat and stable. Dust it with a dry soft brush and keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade tinted resin over years.
