Industrial Floating Wall Shelf

Floating shelves solve the awkward wall - the strip beside a door, the space above a desk, the alcove too shallow for a cabinet. This one keeps the fixings visible rather than hiding them, with exposed metal brackets under a flat board, which is a more honest look and, in practice, considerably easier to mount square and level than a concealed-rod shelf ever is.

Three widths are offered: thirty centimetres for a single plant or a speaker, forty for books and framed photographs, and fifty for a proper run of storage above a desk or a bathroom basin. Four colours are available, including a tinted neutral that disappears against most walls, plus orange, blue and green if the shelf is meant to be part of the scheme rather than invisible.

The board is MDF with a sealed finish, which is stable, does not warp along its length the way solid timber can, and takes a clean painted edge. Mounting hardware and a fitting guide are supplied. As with any wall-mounted shelf, use fixings appropriate to your particular wall type. The plugs supplied suit solid masonry, while plasterboard will need proper cavity anchors and a sensible view of how much weight you load onto it.
