Japandi Knitted Silk Pendant Light

This shade is knitted by hand from silk thread over a domed former, and the open weave is the whole point: light escapes through the gaps as well as the open base, so the shade itself glows and casts a fine lattice of shadow onto the ceiling around it. Unlit it reads as a soft textile dome, which is unusual in a room full of glass and metal fittings. Hung as a pair it reads almost like a piece of soft sculpture, and the lattice it throws moves slightly as the shade settles after installation.

Two sizes are offered. The 30cm version hangs well in a pair over a kitchen island or singly beside a bed; the 50cm works as the main fitting above a dining table, where its diameter matches a four to six seater. Both are shallow at 18cm and 25cm deep, so they sit high enough not to block sightlines across a table.

It uses an E27 LED and includes a touch on-off switch on the cord, which is handier than it sounds when the fitting is over a bed rather than a table. Silk is delicate: keep the shade away from steam and cooking grease, dust it with a soft brush or a low-suction upholstery nozzle, and never try to wash or wet-wipe the weave.
