Japanese Bamboo Table Lamp

Woven bamboo makes a shade that does two jobs at once: it diffuses the bulb into a soft, warm glow, and it throws the pattern of the weave across the wall and ceiling behind it. This lamp pairs that shade with a turned wooden base, so the whole piece reads as one natural material rather than a shade balanced on a metal stem. Lit or unlit it looks deliberate, which is not always true of woven lighting.

Three sizes are offered so the lamp can suit different jobs around the house. The smallest is tall and narrow at roughly thirteen centimetres across and thirty-six high, which suits a crowded bedside table. The two larger options are broader and lower, at around twenty by twenty-five centimetres and fifteen by twenty-five, and work better on a sideboard or a wide shelf where the pattern has room to spread.

The fitting takes a standard E27 screw bulb, so you can choose your own brightness and colour temperature rather than living with a fixed LED. A warm white bulb suits the material best and keeps the honey tone of the bamboo. The lamp runs on mains power at eighty-five to two hundred and sixty-five volts. Dust the weave with a soft brush rather than a damp cloth, and keep the shade clear of the bulb.
