Japanese Pattern Table Lamp 27cm

A small bedside lamp where the Japanese and Scandinavian traditions meet in the obvious place: a plain turned base in natural wood or bamboo, and a square fabric shade carrying a printed pattern. The base is deliberately quiet so the shade can carry the decoration, and the square section gives a crisper shadow line on a wall than a round drum would.

Four patterns are offered. Red Blossom is the warmest and the boldest; Blue Blossom is cooler and reads well against a white wall; Yellow Blossom is the softest of the three florals; Lotus is the most graphic and the least literal. All four are printed on a close-woven fabric that diffuses the bulb evenly, so the pattern glows rather than being backlit into a silhouette.

At 12 by 27 centimetres it is a genuinely small lamp, which is the point - it fits the corner of a nightstand alongside a book and a glass, or a narrow shelf where a standard bedside lamp would not go. A push-button switch on the body means no groping for a cord in the dark. The fabric shade should be dusted with a soft brush rather than wiped, and the lamp kept clear of curtains and bedding.
