La Toupie Hand-Blown Glass Pendant

La Toupie takes its name and its outline from a spinning top: a wide shoulder that tapers to a point at the base. The glass is hand blown, which means the wall thickness varies slightly from piece to piece and the light coming through it is never completely uniform. That irregularity is what separates it from a moulded shade, and it shows most clearly when the fitting is lit at night.

Three profiles are offered at the same price. Model A is the tallest at roughly 33cm high and 33cm across; Model B is the most compact at 30cm by 30cm; Model C sits between the two at 30cm wide and 35cm high. Hung as a row of three over a kitchen island they can be mixed, which avoids the slightly showroom look of three identical pendants.

The cord adjusts to about 150cm and the canopy copes with sloped ceilings up to 30 degrees, which is useful in a loft conversion. It takes an E26 or E27 bulb up to 40W, not supplied, and is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. Glass over a hob collects grease, so site it clear of the cooking zone and wipe it with a dry cloth. Small bubbles and faint tooling marks in the glass are part of how the shade is made and are not considered faults.
