Replacing a shade is the cheapest way to change a lamp completely, and a drum in natural linen is the safest bet of all because it does not date and it flatters almost every base. This one is handmade in a slightly tapered barrel shape, 18cm across the top, 33cm across the bottom and 20cm high, which is the medium size that suits most table lamps and a good many floor lamps too. Linen diffuses light softly and lets a little through the weave, so the shade itself glows rather than going flat and dark.
Nine colourways are offered. White and light grey stay quietly neutral. Brown, coffee, grey brown and bronze give a warmer, older feel that suits brass and dark timber. Black reads as the most graphic and throws light up and down rather than out. Two patterned options are also available: a pale yellow with fine gold flecks, and a black shade with a gold tree motif for anyone who wants the shade to be the feature rather than the base.
The shade uses a spider fitting, which sits on a harp above the lampholder and is held by a finial. Check your base has a harp before ordering, since spider shades will not clip onto a bulb. Fabric shades and heat do not mix: use an LED lamp, keep the shade clear of the bulb, and never drape anything over it. Dust with a soft brush or cool air rather than a damp cloth.
