Lion Head Wall Sculpture

Wall art does not have to be flat. A sculpted head projecting from the plaster throws real shadow and changes as you move past it, which no print can do, and a lion is about as declarative a subject as the form allows. The mane here is modelled in deep overlapping locks rather than a shallow relief, so the piece holds its drama under a downlight or a wall lamp.

The finish is a warm antique gold rather than a bright one, closer to old gilding than to metallic paint, which keeps it the right side of theatrical. Two sizes cover different jobs: 22cm works above a console or at the end of a hallway, while 28cm is enough to anchor a feature wall on its own. Both look best hung slightly above eye level, where the modelling of the face reads properly.

Cast resin keeps the weight manageable, but this still needs a fixing rated for the load and the wall type - not a picture hook. Check for pipes and cables before drilling, and fix into a solid substrate or use an appropriate plasterboard anchor. Dust with a soft dry brush; the antiqued finish will lift if scrubbed or cleaned with chemicals.
