Macaron Iron Bedside Wall Light

A simple painted iron cup, twenty-three centimetres high and twelve across, projecting just over eleven from the wall. The shape is deliberately plain so the colour can do the talking, and there are eight of them, from soft pink and beige through to two-tone combinations in red and green. In a plain bedroom or a child's room it is the cheapest way to put a piece of real colour on the wall.

It works best in pairs. Mounted either side of a bed at around a hundred and forty centimetres from the floor, the pair frees up both bedside tables and gives light that falls where you actually read rather than across the whole room. Singly, it suits a corridor, a stair return, or the wall beside a favourite chair, where one warm pool of light is more useful than a bright ceiling.

The fitting takes one E27 lamp, not supplied, and runs on mains voltage between a hundred and ten and two hundred and forty volts. A warm LED at low wattage suits the scale. It is hardwired to a wall point rather than plugged in, so installation is a job for a qualified electrician. Rated for dry indoor locations, and the painted finish should be wiped with a soft damp cloth rather than a solvent.
