Magnetic Wood Night Light

A small block of timber seven centimetres wide and four high, with a magnetic back so it lifts off its wall mount and can be carried around the house. That is the useful part: it works as a fixed night light beside a bed or on a landing, and as a torch for the last few steps to the bathroom, without needing two separate objects or a socket in the right place.

Two woods are offered. Beech is pale and even grained, which suits a light bedroom or a child's room; sapele is darker and redder, closer to mahogany, and works better against painted timber or a darker wall. Both are finished plainly so the grain shows, and both use the same plastic and metal internals behind the wooden face.

The integrated LED draws four watts and produces around four hundred lumens, which is bright enough to see by without being harsh in the middle of the night. It is switched by touching the face rather than hunting for a button. The unit is USB rechargeable and contains a lithium battery, so it should be recycled through electrical waste at the end of its life rather than put in household refuse.
