Marble and Wood Ceiling Light 12cm

A small ceiling fitting built around a single piece of honey-toned stone, cut thin enough that the light passes through it and picks out the veining. Every piece is different, which is the point: the wabi-sabi tradition this borrows from treats the irregularity of natural material as the finish rather than a flaw. The turned wood collar that holds it keeps the whole thing warm and domestic instead of cold and mineral.

It is genuinely compact at 12 centimetres across and 10 deep, which makes it useful in the places a normal ceiling light overwhelms - the top of a narrow stair, an alcove, a downstairs cloakroom, or as a pair either side of a corridor. Choose the base in natural wood for a paler, Scandinavian reading, or in walnut where the surrounding joinery is darker and you want the fitting to sit into it rather than stand out.

The fitting takes one E27 bulb, not supplied, and runs on the standard UK mains range. A warm filament-style LED suits the stone best; anything too cool flattens the veining. This is a hardwired mains fitting and should be installed by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated first. Rated for dry locations only and not for bathroom zones 0, 1 or 2. Fit to a ceiling point rated for the weight.
