Meho Opal Glass Shell Ceiling Light

The Meho rings a brass frame with overlapping opal glass discs, each one clipped in place so the edges lift slightly and catch the light like petals around a flower head. The layering is what gives the fitting depth. From directly below it reads as a soft scalloped circle, and from across a room the discs separate out into individual shells. It is decorative without being ornate, and it holds its shape well against a plain ceiling.

The frame is metal in a brass finish and the discs are glass, so the light from the five lamps behind them is diffused rather than aimed. That produces an even, glare-free wash across the ceiling instead of a bright downward beam. Bulbs are not supplied, which leaves brightness and warmth open to preference. At 40cm across and only 23cm deep, this is a semi-flush fitting rather than a pendant.

The shallow drop suits rooms with a standard or slightly low ceiling where a hanging pendant would sit in the way, so it works as a main light in a bedroom, a hallway, a landing or a small sitting room. Diffused output is the useful property in a bedroom, where a hard downward beam would be intrusive. The glass discs collect dust along their upper edges over time and are best cleaned with a soft dry brush.
