Minimalist Resin Horse Ornament

A horse reduced to its outline: the arch of the neck, the line of the back and four straight legs, with the detail of mane, tail and face left out entirely. Cast in resin and finished matte, it stands eighteen and a half centimetres tall and sixteen long, which is small enough for a bookshelf or a mantelpiece and large enough to hold its own there.

Because the form is so simple it reads as a shape first and an animal second, which is what makes it sit comfortably in a room that is otherwise plain. Three finishes are offered. The white disappears into a pale wall and shows its silhouette instead; the burnt orange gives a shelf of books a warm full stop; the blue is the coolest of the three and works best against wood.

Resin takes a crisp edge and a smooth even colour, and unlike a ceramic figure of this shape it will survive being knocked over. The base is flat and unweighted, so give it a level surface rather than a sloping windowsill. Dust it with a dry cloth, and keep it out of long hours of direct sun, which can slowly fade a coloured resin finish.
