Modern Cuckoo Pendulum Wall Clock

The cuckoo clock has spent a century being carved, stained and hung in the wrong houses. This is the version that escapes all that: the same essential idea - a pendulum, a little door, a bird that announces the hour - rendered in clean lines and flat colour, with the fussy woodwork stripped out entirely. It is still recognisably a cuckoo clock, but one you would put in a modern kitchen without apology.

On the hour the door opens and the bird calls, with the pendulum swinging steadily below in between. Green gives it a soft heritage feel against pale walls; white keeps it almost graphic. It runs on batteries rather than weights and chains, so there is nothing to wind, and the call can be silenced if you would rather not be announced to at seven in the morning.

It hangs from a single fixing, so check for pipes and cables before drilling and use a fixing rated for the wall. Batteries are not supplied. Mount it securely and out of a child's reach - the pendulum and the door are moving parts, and it is a clock rather than a toy. Dust with a dry cloth. Hang it where the pendulum swings freely and clear of a door that might knock it.
